Animal Mammal Classification

Animal Classification

Taxonomy and Animal Features

When classifying animals, scientists consider the features that they share. The more features that a group of animals shares, the more specific that animal classification. For example, all mammals have fur, give birth to live young, and produce milk to feed their young. These features distinguish mammals from other groups of animals, such as birds, reptiles, and amphibians.

Mammalian Orders

There are different methods of classifying mammals into orders. One method is to group mammals based on their diet. For example, carnivores eat meat, herbivores eat plants, and omnivores eat both plants and meat. Another method is to group mammals based on their physical characteristics. For example, hoofed mammals have hooves, and primates have opposable thumbs.

By considering the features that animals share, scientists can classify them into different groups. This helps us to understand the relationships between different animals and how they have evolved over time.
