Andreeva Stuns Sabalenka To Reach French Open Last 16

Andreeva stuns Sabalenka to reach French Open last 16

Teenager wins biggest career win over out-of-sorts Sabalenka

Unseeded Russian Andreeva came from behind to beat second seed Sabalenka in a thrilling encounter on Court Philippe Chatrier

Russian teenager Mirra Andreeva claimed the biggest win of her career against an out-of-sorts Aryna Sabalenka to reach the last 16 of the French Open.

The 17-year-old, who is playing in only her second Grand Slam, came from behind to beat the world number two 6-7 (2) 5-7 6-4 6-4 on Court Philippe Chatrier and set up a clash against 2017 champion Jelena Ostapenko.

Sabalenka, who was the runner-up at last year’s Wimbledon, was the heavy favourite for the match but she was far from her best and made a series of unforced errors.

Andreeva, who is ranked 113th in the world, took full advantage of her opponent’s mistakes and showed great composure to close out the match in four sets.

The victory is a major breakthrough for Andreeva, who has now beaten two top-10 players at this year’s French Open. She will be looking to continue her run when she takes on Ostapenko in the last 16.
