Steve Bannon Sentenced to Four Months in Prison for Contempt of Congress

Bannon Found Guilty of Defying Subpoena from House Select Committee Investigating January 6 Attack

Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon has been sentenced to four months in prison for contempt of Congress after defying a subpoena from the House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Bannon, who served as Trump's chief strategist before departing the White House in August 2017, was convicted in July 2022 after failing to provide documents and testimony to the committee.

Bannon Says He Will Fight Ruling

Bannon has vowed to fight the judge's ruling ordering him to report to prison by July 1. "I'm not going to let these people take me down," Bannon said in a statement. "I'm going to fight this tooth and nail." Bannon has also filed an appeal with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

Appeals Court Upholds Conviction

In March 2023, a federal appeals court upheld Bannon's criminal conviction. The decision cleared the way for Bannon to be sent to prison after years of legal wrangling. Bannon, 70, has been a vocal supporter of Trump and has been accused of spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories.

Bannon to Serve Four-Month Sentence

Unless his appeal is successful, Bannon is expected to begin serving his four-month sentence in a federal prison by July 1. The sentence sends a strong message that individuals cannot defy subpoenas from congressional committees investigating matters of national importance.
