The asylum seekers' centre in Ter Apel is completely overcrowded. Hundreds of people have to spend the night outside on chairs or on the floor. They have to wait days for a bed. The situation has been going on for months, and the COA is sounding the alarm. "We can't take it anymore".

Waiting for days

At the moment, around 700 asylum seekers are staying in the Ter Apel application centre. This is almost double the capacity of the centre. As a result, hundreds of people have to spend the night outside. They sleep on chairs or on the floor, with a sleeping bag or blanket. Some people have been waiting for days for a bed.

The COA calls the situation "unworthy". "This is not the way to treat people who are fleeing war and violence," says COA board member Milo Schoenmaker. "We need the government to take action now."

Rats and scabies

In addition to the overcrowding, there are also major hygiene problems at the application centre. There are rats and mice running around, and there is a scabies outbreak. "People are getting sick," says Schoenmaker. "This is a breeding ground for diseases."

Government needs to take action

The COA has been sounding the alarm for months, but the government has not yet taken any concrete action. The cabinet is still working on a plan to tackle the asylum crisis, but it is not yet clear when this plan will be ready.

In the meantime, the situation at the Ter Apel application centre is only getting worse. "We can't take it anymore," says Schoenmaker. "The government needs to take action now."

Mohammed (25) vluchtte twee maanden geleden uit Syrië. Hij liet zijn vrouw en kinderen achter, in de hoop in Nederland een veilig heenkomen te vinden. Maar ook voor hem is er in Ter Apel geen plek.

Mohammed zit al dagen op een stoel in de wachtruimte van het aanmeldcentrum. Hij heeft honger en is moe, maar hij mag het centrum niet verlaten. "Ik weet niet wat ik moet doen," zegt hij wanhopig. "Ik heb geen geld, geen eten en geen onderdak."

Mohammed is een van de vele asielzoekers die de afgelopen maanden naar Nederland zijn gekomen. Het aanmeldcentrum in Ter Apel is overvol, en er is geen plek voor iedereen. Honderden mensen moeten buiten slapen, op stoelen of op de grond. Ze hebben dagenlang moeten wachten op een bed.

De situatie is schrijnend. Mensen zijn uitgeput, ziek en wanhopig. "Dit is geen manier om mensen te behandelen," zegt Mohammed. "We zijn geen criminelen. We zijn mensen die op zoek zijn naar een veilig thuis."
